At Hearts & Howls Rescue, our goal isn't just to find homes for homeless pets—it's to keep pets with the families who already love them whenever possible.
The DFW metroplex is experiencing a pet overpopulation crisis. Shelters and rescues are operating beyond capacity, making it increasingly difficult to place owner-surrendered animals.
While we understand that life sometimes brings unexpected challenges, we encourage every pet owner to explore all available resources before making the difficult decision to rehome their pet.
For many animals, staying with the family they already know is the best outcome. Rehoming can be confusing and emotionally stressful for pets, especially those who have spent years in one home. Below you'll find resources that may help you keep your beloved companion or safely navigate unexpected situations. If rehoming truly is your only option, we encourage you to take the time to find the safest and most appropriate home possible.
Before You Rehome
Ask yourself:

Is this problem temporary?

Could training help?

Have I spoken with my veterinarian about medical or behavioral concerns?

Have I explored temporary assistance with food or supplies?

Would a family member or trusted friend be willing to help?
Many situations can be resolved with the right support.
Safe Rehoming Tips
If Rehoming Is Necessary:

Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered.

Charge a reasonable adoption fee to discourage individuals with harmful intentions.

Meet potential adopters in person.

Ask for veterinary references.

Ask about other pets in the home.

Visit the home or request photos when possible.

Be honest about your pet's personality, behavior, and medical history.

Never advertise a pet as "Free to Good Home."

Request that the adopter contact you if they can no longer keep your pet.
Consider Returning Your Pet

If your pet came from a breeder or rescue, contact them first. Many reputable breeders and rescues require pets to be returned to them rather than surrendered elsewhere and are often willing to help.

Their mission is to help people who are in dire need to find new forever homes for their pets. The page is NOT for breeders to post their puppies or to rehome pets for profit. There is a min & max rehoming fee. It is also for people who are looking to find a pet to adopt.
